Macaw Lodge has positioned itself as a leader in cacao experiences in Costa Rica, offering the best cacao and chocolate tour in the country. What truly sets this tour apart is that the entire process, from cacao production to chocolate crafting, takes place on-site. As both cacao producers and chocolate artisans, we have created a brand that continues to gain recognition in both the local and international markets.
Our cacao is cultivated in agroforestry systems that include endangered species, reinforcing our commitment to biodiversity. During the tour, visitors have the opportunity to experience the entire process, from harvesting and fermentation to the chocolate-making process. Additionally, the tour delves into the biology of cacao and its history in Mesoamerica. At Macaw Lodge, we have a patented infographic illustrating the interspecific relationships of cacao, an exclusive resource for our visitors.
The cacao we produce is of fine flavor and aroma, and we process it in a small factory made from repurposed containers, powered by solar energy, located at the foot of the majestic Cerro Turrubares. During the tour, visitors will also have the chance to taste our specialty: the “Maya drink,” a traditional recipe that connects to the rich history of the Maya civilization and its relationship with cacao, a fruit that made its way from the Amazon to Mesoamerica.
Introducing Our New Coffee Tour!
We are excited to announce that we have developed a new area next to our factory, where visitors can now see cacao and coffee plantations. Our sustainably grown coffee, used in the production of our chocolates, represents the coffee of the future.
We are in the final stages of preparing for the launch of our new coffee tour, where visitors will be able to explore the different species of coffee we grow and learn about the history of this remarkable crop, deeply intertwined with the history of Costa Rica. Our tour will explore the origins of coffee, its global expansion, and the influence it has had on Costa Rican culture.
During the harvest season, participants will have the opportunity to join our guides in the coffee-picking process, experiencing an authentic and immersive journey into coffee production. We are confident that this new tour will be a success, thanks to the unique and enriching experiences that have always defined us.
